De Ligt explained why he turned Barça down
Matthijs de Ligt justified his move to Juventus, explaining why he decided to decline FC Barcelona’s offer. The Dutch centre-back explained his motivations for finally finishing in Turin.
“I love the way the Italians defend and I made a decision based on that. Many of my models and past references are Italian: Baresi, Maldini, Nesta, Cannavaro, Scirea… And I could go on,” explained the player in an interview for Ajax TV.
However, Matthijs de Ligt admitted: “It was a difficult decision. I had several options andyou always have to see which one is the best. There are a lot of factors involved. It’s important to know how much I’ll play and how much the club trusts me, that’s why I picked Juventus, becaue they told me they really wanted me”.
The centre-back also wanted to say goodbye to Ajax: “I played here for ten years at youth level and three years in the first team. It’s exciting to leave this club. I’ve had some good and bad moments. I’ll miss everyone in Amsterdam, but now I have to go one step further. “
At 19 years of age, Matthijs de Ligt has emerged as one of the best central defenders of the moment, with a promising future. As a result, the former Ajax captain has made his mark on teams such as FC Barcelona, PSG and Juventus to underpin their attacking fortunes.
Although his path seemed to have been written for the Camp Nou, the negotiating demands of the Dutch defender led by Mino Raiola ended up taking him to Turin, where Cristiano Ronaldo has added yet another star player in order to fight for the Champions League this season.
